Significance: Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is the first modern university in Romania, founded just one year after the formation of the modern Romanian state.
The university traces its roots back to the Princely Academy, founded in 1642, which later evolved into the Academia Mihăileană in 1835 — an institution focused on philosophy and sciences.
In 1860, Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza officially transformed the academy into a university through a formal decree. The university was later named in his honor.
The university was officially inaugurated on October 26, 1860, with three founding faculties:
Faculty of Law
Faculty of Philosophy
Faculty of Theology
