Although the university was officially established as an independent institution in 1937, its roots go back to the 19th century, when engineering education first began in Iași under the umbrella of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University.
In 1813, Romanian scholar Gheorghe Asachi initiated the first engineering courses taught in the Romanian language, making him one of the pioneers of technical education in Romania. The university was later named in his honor to recognize his major contributions.
Over time, the engineering faculties were separated from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and restructured into a standalone technical institution, officially formed in 1937. Since then, Gheorghe Asachi Technical University has grown into one of the most prestigious technical universities in Romania and Eastern Europe. Today, it includes multiple faculties specializing in engineering, architecture, information technology, and applied sciences.
