The university was originally established in 1948 as the "Petroleum and Gas Institute" in Bucharest, aimed at meeting the growing demands of Romania’s oil industry.
In 1967, the institute was moved to the city of Ploiești, a major hub of the Romanian oil industry.
In 1992, the institute was transformed into a university called “University of Ploiești”, expanding its academic programs.
In 1993, the university adopted its current name, “Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiești”, to emphasize its specialization in petroleum and gas engineering education.
