Originally part of Babeş‑Bolyai University (Cluj):
In 1967, approval was obtained to create a Faculty of Philology and History in Sibiu.
This faculty officially opened in 1969, offering German and History programs.
Expansion in the early 1970s:
1971 saw the launch of English studies and a new Faculty of Economic Sciences & Administration.
Institute of Higher Education (1976):
In 1976, Sibiu’s faculties (Philology & History, Economics & Administration, Mechanics) united under a new institute.
Setback and closure (1984–1990):
In 1984, the institute was downgraded to a sub-engineering school under Cluj’s Polytechnic Institute; faculties in philology, history, and law were closed by 1987.
Re-establishment as a university (1990):
Post-1989 revolution, the Sibiu Institute resumed autonomous activity.
On 5 March 1990, it was renamed Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, launching five faculties: Letters, History & Law; Sciences; Medicine; Engineering; and Food & Textile Technology. The Orthodox Theological Institute “Andrei Şaguna” joined in 1991.
